The major U.S. regulated online gaming states recently released revenue numbers for September and the numbers showed some nice increases overall.
The September totals included a new iGaming record in Pennsylvania online gambling and some hefty online gaming growth in New Jersey and Michigan. Here’s a look inside the statistics.
Pennsylvania
The Keystone State reported big numbers for all forms of gaming yet again, including another record for the iGaming sector. All forms of gaming revenue in the state during September totaled $476.3 million, an increase of 6.2% compared to September 2022, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.
The Hollywood Casino once again held the top spot in the state, generating $77 million in revenue, an increase of 16.8% from $666 million for the same month last year. Valley Forge overtook Parx as the state’s No. 2 casino with $66.1 million, up 24.6% from the $53 million last September.
Total tax revenue for the month reached $197.7 million. When it comes to online gaming, September became a record for monthly gross revenue – totaling $159.5 million compared to $112.7 million in September 2022, an increase of 41.5%. The state’s previous record iGaming month came in March, a total of $148.2 million.
Monthly iGaming tax revenue reached $69.1 million. Here’s a breakdown of September’s PA online casino revenue totals:
- Slots – $114.7 million
- Table games – $42.4 million
- Online poker – $2.4 million
On the sports betting front, total wagering handle (both live and online) reached $726.3 million in September, a 12.6% increase from the same month in 2022 ($645.2 million). However, the taxable revenue figure was $36.6 million, 27.1% lower when compared to September 2022 ($50.2 million). Online wagering totaled $32.1 million with live betting bringing $4.6 million in revenue.
New Jersey
The Garden State came up big in September as well with revenue numbers mostly increasing across the board. For all live gaming, the state saw a small decline compared to 2022, according to the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. Revenue for the state’s nine casino properties was $246.5 million, a decrease of 2.1% from the $251.7 million reported in September 2022.
Year-to-date revenue for the live casino properties is almost $2.2 billion, up 1.8% when compared to $2.1 billion for the prior year-to-date period in 2022.
For NJ online casino gaming, casinos and their partners reported revenue of $163.8 million, an increase of 21.1% compared to $135.2 million in September 2022. Year to date, the control board reported revenue of $1.4 billion, reflecting growth of 15.4% compared to $1.2 billion for the prior year-to-date period.
For sports betting, gross revenue reported by casinos, racetracks, and their partners was $111.1 million for September, an increase of 13.4% from the $98 million reported in the same month in 2022. The year-to-date total is now at $709 million, a 37.2% increase compared to $516.9 million reported in the same period during 2022.
When considering all forms of gaming, live and online wagering as well as sports betting, total revenue for September was $521.5 million, up 7.5% from $485 million reported from the same month in 2022. For the year-to-date numbers, total gaming revenue reached $4.3 billion, a 10.8% increase from the $3.9 billion reported in the prior year-to-date period.
Michigan
Commercial and tribal casinos and their partners reported total gross receipts of $210.4 million for online gaming and sports betting revenue in September. This was an increase of 20% from August, with the start of football season lifting sports betting numbers. iGaming numbers were also on the rise.
Broken out, All Michigan online casinos alone totaled $166.4 million with sports betting at $44 million. These numbers are up from August’s gross receipts totals of $152.2 million for iGaming and $23.2 million for sports.
Combined total iGaming and online sports betting adjusted gross receipts (AGR) for September reached $168.5 million, including $149.8 million from iGaming and $18.7 million from sports. This represents increases of 9.2% and 17.8%, respectively, compared to August.
Compared to September 2022, iGaming AGR was up by 29.3%. Notably, however, sports betting was down by 31.1% during this time. Total online sports betting handle was $457.7 million, up $239.2 million from the $218.5 million in August.
Operators submitted $32.6 million in taxes and payments to the state during September, including:
- Online gaming – $31.3 million
- Online sports betting – $1.3 million
The three Detroit casinos reported paying the City of Detroit almost $8 million in taxes and municipal services fees. Tribal operators reported making $4 million in payments to governing bodies in September.
